RESPIRE FOR BETTER CARE
A Project Based Learning (PBL) activity designed for community college respiratory care seniors

Why PBL? Because PBL utilizes a challenging problem or question that has real-world relevance for students careers.  The PBL unit should create sustained inquiry, be student centered and driven and encourage reflection.  Students will be evaluated by their peers and instructor to allow for revisions before presenting their public product. These components foster the utilization of higher learning skills and meet P21 Standards for education.  To see our curent performance compared to other nations, use the PISA tool available here.

The PBL learning module begins with a motivational introduction video accessible here.

The video represents a real world authentic problem and is intended to engage students in answering the driving question:

"As Professionals how can we make healthcare safer for our patients using regulatory standards and evidence-based practice?"

Health care reform is a product of public demand for improved quality, safety, and affordability.  As a member of the healthcare team, we have a professional responsibility to deliver high quality, safe patient care in an efficient manner.

Departmental, institutional and industry standards and associated policies and procedures attempt to ensure best practices are implemented and followed. Healthcare is a rapidly evolving field, new evidence on best practice is constantly emerging. Hospitals and departments rely on direct care providers to identify problems and voice concerns. Interdisciplinary clinician participation is essential to develop, revise and evaluate policies and procedures to ensure high quality, safe patient care.

This project is designed to introduce students to participating at a professional level to evaluate hospital policies, procedures, and processes that govern clinical practice.  Students should be proficient in their clinical skills and knowledge of therapeutic respiratory care. The project is aimed at senior level respiratory care students or higher, as this PBL unit will require them to evaluate the processes and procedures used in clinical practice and make evidence-based recommendations to improve patient safety.
