Project Idea
This project based learning activity will combine a classroom and a clinically based course. Students will work together with their teacher and clinical instructor as well as clinical affiliates.
To begin we will examine the history of patient safety since the 5 Million Lives campaign, review the current safety goals in the industry, compare those goals with current practices. Students will work together in their clinical groups to examine patient safety goals from a respiratory care perspective, evaluating current practice with best practices in the industry. Each student group will become experts on one identified patient safety concern. The students will collaborate with professionals in the field at their respective clinical sites to identify problems, brainstorm solutions and develop processes for improvement. As a culminating activity, the clinical groups will create a visual product that promotes awareness of proposed changes for improving patient safety. The product will first be presented to their peers and then to the respective clinical affiliates.
